Vietnamese women and magnolia blooming seasons in Europe
In that scene, there is a Vietnamese woman who every year puts on her most beautiful dress, walks under the blooming flowers and captures that moment with a camera with her husband. For Ms. Chau Nguyet Minh (currently living in Zurich, Switzerland), magnolia is not only a beautiful flower, but also a part of memories, emotions and a philosophy of peaceful life in the heart of modern Europe.
"It only blooms once a year, so I cherish the magnolia season even more"
Ms. Minh said that magnolias in Europe usually bloom at the end of March, lasting about two weeks, depending on the weather each year. This year, the long winter has caused the flowers to bloom later, but they are still just as brilliant.
Magnolia, also known as Magnolia, is a flower with noble and pure beauty, known by many different names such as Moc Huong, Bach Ngoc Lan, Moc Nien or Giang Huong. Originating from temperate regions such as East Asia, North America and Central America, magnolia is one of the perennial woody plants, often grown as an ornamental in parks, home gardens or entrances to ancient villas.

Magnolia trees can be from a few meters to more than 20 meters tall, with a straight trunk and wide canopy, 12-15cm in diameter, sometimes as big as an adult's hand. The leaves are oval, dark green, grow alternately and usually fall off in winter. It is when the leaves fall from the branches that the magnolia tree enters the blooming period, the most anticipated moment of the year. The petals are thick, oval, smooth and shiny like porcelain, blooming proudly in gentle colors such as white, pink, pale yellow or purple. The special thing is that the flowers last a long time and retain their quiet and attractive beauty as if they have not been touched by time.
Magnolia is a slow-growing tree, but when mature, it can be up to ten meters tall, with a wide and shady canopy. Ms. Minh said that her favorite flowers often grow in parks, lakesides or large gardens in German-speaking cities such as Zurich, Aargau or even across the border - Rheinfelden, Germany.
“Every time the flowers bloom, I feel like I meet an old friend after 50 weeks of waiting,” Ms. Minh shared.
The love and excitement for this flower comes from the novelty. In Vietnam, she had never seen magnolia flowers with her own eyes. When she went to Switzerland, the first time she saw a magnolia tree blooming in the cold spring sky, she was fascinated. The flower color is gentle, sometimes white, sometimes light pink, sometimes purple, large and elegant. For her, no flower is as quietly brilliant as magnolia.

"Every flower season is an appointment with yourself"
Flowers do not bloom for anyone, nor do they fade for anyone, but Ms. Minh always wants to preserve that beauty in each frame. Every year, she chooses a new dress to avoid the same as the previous year, coordinating her outfit with the scenery, sometimes just to create a truly feminine frame in the middle of nature.
“Magnolia flowers are different every year. Some years they bloom profusely, some years they are sparse due to the weather. I also change, at least my hairstyle, dress or mood. Taking photos is a way for me to quietly talk to the flowers in a very feminine way,” she smiled.
Her journey of “following the magnolias” always has her husband as a companion. She often rides her bike to “scout” beautiful trees, then convinces her husband to take her again to take pictures. She holds the camera to take pictures of the flowers, while he stands behind the lens to capture the image of his wife radiant in the spring.
"I am very grateful to my husband for patiently accompanying me through each flower season. Even though he sometimes complains that 'the flowers are the same every year', he still happily takes the photo in the end."
She can spend hours under the magnolia tree not to take pictures, but just to read books, admire the flowers and watch the bees diligently collect nectar. There, in the gentle sunshine of early spring Europe, all the worries of daily life seem to subside.
"It is a very quiet form of happiness. There is no need to do anything, just sit still and feel like you are truly living."
Every year, the magnolia blooms again. The same pink color, the same petals, but in the heart of that woman, the flower season is never the same. Perhaps because she not only takes photos to preserve beauty, but also to remind herself: life always needs soft, gentle things like a petal slowly falling in the sky on spring days.
