Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection: "Orienting the total production value of flower and ornamental plant sector reach 70-75 trillion VND by 2025"
Vietnam's flower and ornamental plant sector: Great potential, not small challenges
According to data released by the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection at the National Workshop on "Sustainable development of Vietnam's flower and ornamental plant sector" on the afternoon of May 10 in Hanoi, Vietnam's flower and ornamental plant sector is developing positively with a total flower growing area of about 37,000 hectares.
In particular, the Red River Delta is one of the key production areas, with typical localities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh and Vinh Phuc. Commonly grown flowers include roses, chrysanthemums, gerberas, orchids and gladiolus.
The domestic flower consumption market is expanding, especially during holidays, Tet and for urban, office and event decoration. In addition, a part of the flower output has been exported to markets such as Japan, Korea and some European countries.

However, the Vietnam's flower and ornamental plant sector is also facing many difficulties. Production infrastructure and post-harvest preservation are still limited, and flower and ornamental plant growing technology is still largely small-scale and traditional. In addition, the lack of stable output, unstable prices and fierce competition from imported flowers and ornamental plants have made farmers hesitant to invest in expanding their scale.
Building brands and improving product quality to meet high-end and export markets is still a big problem that needs to be solved in the coming time.
Orienting the production value of the entire flower and ornamental plant sector in 2025 to reach 70-75 trillion VND
From there, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection has set out the development orientation for the Vietnamese flower and ornamental plant sector in the future. In the coming period, it is necessary to focus on the goal of building a sustainable production sector, contributing to shifting the crop structure, increasing people's income and improving the cultural and spiritual life of the community.
Specifically, the total production value of the sector in 2025 is expected to reach 50–55 trillion VND and strives to reach 70–75 trillion VND by 2030. Regarding exports, by 2025, the expected export value is expected to reach about 130–150 million USD, by 2030 it will reach about 180–200 million USD. Economic efficiency is also focused on, with the goal of achieving an average value of 700–750 million VND/ha/year on the area of flowers and ornamental plants. The whole country strives to have about 130–150 craft villages officially recognized in this field by 2030.

To achieve that goal, Vietnam focuses on developing science and technology throughout the production chain: from selecting and importing new flower and ornamental plant varieties with characteristics suitable for domestic and foreign market needs, to researching synchronous technical processes from breeding, planting, care, canopy shaping, harvesting, preliminary processing and product preservation. The application of digital technology in production, management and consumption is also prioritized, along with reviewing and adjusting technical standards to suit practical needs.
Regarding the market, the flower sector focuses on researching the culture of using flowers and ornamental plants in daily life and festivals, in office spaces, urban areas, residential areas and industrial areas. At the same time, the sector encourages product diversification, improving designs, packaging and traceability to enhance brand value.

Promotional activities such as fairs and exhibitions on flowers and ornamental plants will also be promoted. For export markets, it is necessary to conduct more in-depth research on consumer tastes and cultures in countries such as China, Japan, Korea, etc., while promoting links between businesses and cooperatives to expand raw material areas and improve competitiveness.
At the local level, including flowers and ornamental plants in the agricultural economic development plan for the period 2021-2030 is considered an urgent requirement. Along with that are synchronous solutions to support the formation and development of cooperatives and cooperative groups for in-depth flower and ornamental plant production, building a value chain connecting businesses and farmers from production to sustainable consumption.
