Ornamental plant market: Million dollar economic potential
In recent years, the market for rare ornamental plants in Vietnam has grown strongly. Not just a hobby for nature lovers, ornamental plants have now become an attractive investment field, bringing high economic value. According to statistics, in 2023, the flower and ornamental plant industry of our country achieved a revenue of 45,000 billion VND, with exports reaching nearly 80 million USD, opening up great potential for gardeners and investors.
One of the rare ornamental plants most sought after by tree enthusiasts is the ancient Sanh tree. The ancient Sanh tree often has a unique bonsai shape, hundreds of years old, representing longevity and stability. Sanh trees with beautiful, unique shapes have been traded for tens of billions of VND, becoming a symbol of wealth and class among collectors.
In addition, the La Han pine is also one of the ornamental plants with high value on the market. With its strong, sturdy appearance and profound feng shui meaning, this tree is considered a symbol of longevity and luck. Ancient pine trees with unique shapes can be traded for billions of dong, attracting the attention of many collectors and investors.

Another equally valuable tree is the giant yellow apricot tree. Not only does it have a feng shui meaning of wealth, but old yellow apricot trees with beautiful shapes, large roots and wide canopies can be valued from hundreds of millions to several billion VND. Every Tet holiday, the yellow apricot market becomes more exciting than ever when many people are willing to spend large sums of money to own a beautiful apricot tree, bringing fortune to their families.
In particular, it is impossible not to mention mutated orchids - one of the plants that once caused a fever in the market with transactions worth tens of billions of VND. Orchids with rare colors, genetic mutations and beautiful, unusual flowers always attract the attention of plant enthusiasts. Although the market for mutated orchids has somewhat cooled down, the value of rare orchids still maintains its position and continues to be the passion of many people.
According to Mr. Pham Quang Thao, Vice President of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (Vusta), Vietnam has great potential in the field of ornamental plants. He emphasized: "The effective exploitation of this resource not only helps develop the rural economy but also increases the income of millions of households working in ornamental plant cultivation."
Sharing the same view, Mr. Nguyen Van Viet, Director of the Planning Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), said that the Ministry is promoting the restructuring of the agricultural sector towards modernization, in which ornamental plants are one of the focused areas. "We need to expand the area of ornamental plant cultivation, increase exports and build brands to increase the value of products in the international market," Mr. Viet commented.

According to experts, by 2025, the Vietnamese flower and ornamental plant industry can expand its area to 50,000 hectares, with an average output value of VND750 million/ha/year, with expected exports of USD150-200 million/year. However, to achieve these impressive figures, the industry needs to focus on developing ornamental plant craft villages, applying high technology in production, and strengthening the connection between gardeners, businesses and the government.
With proper attention and investment, ornamental plants are not only an elegant hobby but also become a promising economic sector, contributing significantly to the sustainable development of agriculture in Vietnam.
